“The fortress on the mountain is haunted by white horses,”

they whisper.

Queen of Shadows

Queen on the Mountain.

— Song of the Fifth Morrigan

I was weak from the yeti leader’s magic, but it didn’t stop me from rushing to Zwena’s side. I grasped her by the shoulders and hauled her into a sitting position. “Zwena! Wake up!”

Her head lolled to the side. Desperately, I looked up at the others.

Teg’s expression was grave. “She must be in a magical food-induced coma.”

Shug bent down, concern on his face. “There is one thing I can do to help, lassie, but I do not know that it will be enough.”

“What is it?” I pressed, feeling responsible for what had happened to the woman in my arms.

Shug rifled in the inner pockets of his cloak and pulled out a black glass bottle. “I can give her this draught. It will wake her and make her throw up, but it will not clean her out entirely.”

I nodded. “Do it.” Shug pried Zwena’s lips apart and slipped the rim of the bottle between them. He tipped it up and massaged her throat so she would swallow.

A moment later, Zwena sputtered and coughed. Her eyelids fluttered open. She lunged out of my arms and heaved the contents of her stomach onto the floor, which had been made of cookies moments ago but was now stone.

Looking around, I saw that the walls were no longer made of gingerbread but plain wood. The glamour over the town hall had faded with the mayor’s life, and now it was just an ordinary building. I wondered if the village had gone through a similar transformation. The wolf’s whine refocused my attention. He nudged a weakened Zwena with his nose.

“Wh-what happened?” Zwena mumbled as she leaned against the wolf.

Shug, Lugh, and I exchanged concerned glances. Lugh pointed the Spear at Zwena, and its soft golden light passed over her. The light rested over her head like a halo and gradually faded.

"Is it done?” I asked.

Lugh nodded. He looked dim after passing his power to the human woman through the Spear.

Zwena sat up straight, looking stronger. “What the hell is going on?”

Lugh looked at me instead of answering Zwena. “The Waning is very close. We need to get her back now. I can keep it at bay with my power, but not for long.” His eyebrows drew together. “It will run out, and I won’t be able to defend myself.”

I turned my attention from Lugh to Zwena.

The woman’s eyes had gone wide. “Back to the human world.” She shook her head, struggling to get up but too weak to make it very far. “I’m not going. I want to stay. I want to help…” She ran out of breath.

I shook my head. “You staying here puts all of us in danger. They used you to get to us. Besides, if you don’t go with Lugh back to the human world, you will get very sick.
